HISTORY OF THE McPIKE NAME :

This very rare and interesting surname is of Irish origin, and is an Anglicization of the Gaelic "MacPeice", meaning "son of Peic", a personal name of uncertain etymology, but thought to be originally derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century "peac", meaning a thickset man. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, or from some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "O", meaning "descendant of", or "Mac", denoting "son of".

The surname is also found recorded in Scotland, and the variants include McPaik, McPeake, McPaike and McPike. The surname is usually found recorded in the Northern counties of Ireland; Fermanagh, Antrim and Tyrone. One James M'Pike, believed to have been born in Edinburgh, Scotland, circa 1750, emigrated to Baltimore in America around the year 1772. Recordings from Church Registers include the marriage of Charles McPake and Ann Brannan on November 14th 1852 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and the birth of Thomas McPake on November 3rd 1865 at Irvinestown, County Fermanagh, Ireland.

The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of James McPeake, which was dated April 29th 1719, marriage to Catharine Logan, in County Antrim, Ireland, during the reign of King George 1 of England, known as "The First Hanoverian", 1714 - 1727.

GENERATION ONE :

1. ~ ~ ~ JOHN McPIKE was born 1798 in Ballynameen, Country Derry, Ireland, and died 12 August 1874 in Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand. He married MARY DUNN about 1819 in Belfast, Ireland. Mary was the daughter of THOMAS DUNN and MARGARET CAMPBELL and was born 1798 in County Antrim, Ireland. Mary died on 5 July 1875 in Onehunga. John and Mary and their six children arrived in Auckland on the ship “Ramilles” on 5 August 1847, the “Ramilles” being the first Fencible Ship to arrive in Auckland. They settled in Onehunga.

John was born in 1798 at the town of Ballynameen, County Derry, Ireland. A sawyer and weaver in Ireland. He enlisted at Belfast in 1818 into the 18th Irish Regiment and served his time around Ireland. He was discharged in 1825 suffering from varicose veins of the leg aged 26 years, height 5'6", hair brown, blue/grey eyes, complexion pale/fresh. On his discharge with varicose veins of the right leg at the age of 55 he was now bald, very good character and his trade a sawyer.

The children were born in Belfast before coming to Onehunga. John donated to the Catholic Schoolhouse in 1848. He held 42 acres in Onehunga as well as one acre in the centre of Onehunga during the 1850s. He obtained a Depasturing Licence for Onehunga in 1853.

During the 1860s he farmed 40 freehold acres at Little Muddy Creek, Laingholm. The family were occupied in farming and pit-sawing. In the 1870s he lived at Onehunga and attended St Mary of the Assumption Church.

John died 1874 aged 76 years and the following year his wife Mary DUNN (born 1798) died aged 77 years.

Margaret arrived in New Zealand with her family on the Fencible Ship “Ramilles” on 5 August 1847. Margaret married REUBEN HASLIP on 19 February 1849 in St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Auckland. Reuben was the son of JOSEPH HASLIP and ANN MASER and was baptized on 20 May 1821 in Holborn, St Andrew, London, England. Reuben had arrived in New Zealand around 1841. Margaret died on 18 May 1903 and was buried at Waikaraka Cemetery (Area 2, Block O, Plot 16). Reuben died on 11 September 1887 in Auckland (RG 1887/1581)

5. ~ ~ ~ CATHERINE McPIKE (JOHN) was born 1835 in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland and was the third daughter of JOHN McPIKE and MARY DUNN. She arrived in New Zealand with her family on the Fencible Ship “Ramilles” on 5 August 1847. Catherine married WILIAM BRIMNER on 17 November 1851 at Onehunga Roman Catholic Church and they had twelve children.

William died in 1874 and Catherine marred WILLIAM WEBBER the following year. They had a daughter Mary born in 1877.

6. ~ ~ ~ ELLEN McPIKE (JOHN) was born 1836 in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland and was the fourth daughter of JOHN McPIKE and MARY DUNN. Ellen arrived in New Zealand with her family on the Fencible Ship “Ramilles” on 5 August 1847. Ellen married CHARLES MOORE on 25 April 1853 at Onehunga Roman Catholic Church. Charles was born on 5 July 1833 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and was the son of CHARLES MOORE and ISABELLA CANNELL. In 1855 his occupation was listed as a Carpenter.

In June 1865 Charles drowned in a boating accident in the Awhitu (Manukau) Harbour while servicing a lighthouse.

From notes "The Moores and The McPikes" by Cathreen Fischer:

The McPike and Moore families were friends of the Governor, Sir George Grey. Ellen McPike's brother James had married Catherine Brown who worked for the Grey family. A small community called Westport on the West Coast of the South Island was just beginning to be settled at this time. Sir George Grey advised Ellen to go to Westport and recommended her for the position of schoolteacher in the new settlement. Ellen left behind her 4 children. The eldest 3 were all at school and there are conflicting reports that the children lived with the Grey family or lived at the convent where they went to school.

On 4 December 1867 Ellen married DAVID REVE (pronounced Reeve). David was born in 1837 in Hawdon, Suffolk, England and died in 1898. In 1867 David’s occupation was listed as a Coal Merchant in Westport.

Anna married FRANCIS JACOB VEDDER in 1861 at Onehunga Roman Catholic Church. Francis was born in 1838 in Glentown, New York, United States of America. Anna died in 1881.

15. ~ ~ ~ ELIZABETH ANN McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was born baptized on 12 December 1868 at Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand and was the eldest daughter of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. Elizabeth married EDWARD BROAD PICKNELL in 1890. Edward died in 1932. Elizabeth died in 1922.

~ GLADYS BERYL KATE PICKNELL, born 1895. Gladys married WILLIAM FRANCIS PETFORD. William died in 1965.

~ RICHARD ALBERT VICTOR PICKNELL, born 1900; died 1986. Richard married ETHEL MAY WARRINGTON in 1927.

16. ~ ~ ~ RICHARD JOHN McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was born on 9 February 1871 and was baptized on 24 March 1872 at Onehunga Roman Catholic Church. He was the seventh son of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. Richard married MARY POLLY ASPIN on 7 January 1897 in Onehunga. Mary was born in 1873 in North Warrego, Queensland, Australia and died in 1962^. Richard died in 1930.

GEORGE McPIKE, born 1897 in Orua Bay, South Auckland; died 1959. George married AMY AGNES MARY WARD in 1926. Amy was born in 1904 in Gore, Southland, New Zealand and died in 1972.

WILLIAM McPIKE, born 1899 in Waiuku, South Auckland; died 1956. William married MARY MARGARET HUDSON in 1928. Mary was born in 1907.

RICHARD JAMES McPIKE, born 26 February 1901 in Waiuku, South Auckland; died 1957. Richard married PHYLLIS IRENE HYLAND. Phyllis was born in 1919 in Waiuku and died in 1991.

MARY EMMA McPIKE, born 1903 in Orua Bay, South Auckland; died 1968.

DAVID DANIEL McPIKE, born 1905 in Orua Bay, South Auckland; died 1969.

ANGUS VINCENT McPIKE, born 1907 in Orua Bay, South Auckland; died 1996. Angus married HELENA ELSIE IDA CHALKE. Helena was born in 1912; died 1990.

CATHERINE MARGARET McPIKE, born 1910 in Pollock, South Auckland. Catherine married ARTHUR VICTOR WATERS. Arthur was born in 1901 in Hunterville, New Zealand; died 1968.

ELIZABETH ANN McPIKE, born 9 February 1914 in Pollock, South Auckland; died 12 January 1986 in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Elizabeth married HAROLD STANSEL HYLAND on 23 June 1938 in Pollock. Harold was born 22 March 1916 in Rangataua, New Zealand.

RAYMOND ASPIN McPIKE, born 9 February 1917 in Pollock, South Auckland; died November 1963. Raymond married NOELEEN MORRISON.

17. ~ ~ ~ GEORGE McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was born on 30 March 1873 in Onehunga, Auckland and was the eighth son of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. George married KATE LIDGARD on 21 August 1902 in Thames, New Zealand. Kate was born on 21 November 1877 in Thames and was the daughter of JOSEPH LIDGARD and BETSY SANDS. Kate died on 25 February 1966 in Auckland. George died on 19 June 1973 in Mangere, Auckland. George and Kate were both buried at Waikaraka Cemetery (Area 3, Block 2, Plot 30 & 36)

MARJORIE EUNICE McPIKE, born 11 August 1903; died 1996. Marjorie married LESLIE KINGSFORD HAMMOND in 1926. Leslie died in 1965.

GEORGE WILLIAM ERIC McPIKE, born 1906. George married GLADYS ANNIE WARDLE in 1930.

KATHLEEN BEULAH McPIKE, born 15 June 1907. Kathleen married JAMES LANDER in 1939.

RONA DULCIBEL McPIKE, born 9 December 1909. Rona married JAMES FORD CARNEGIE in 1934 in Auckland. She later married ALAN CULPITT in 1966.

UNA EVELYN JOYCE McPIKE, born 14 November 1913. Una married EDWARD TYNE. Edward was born in 1910; died 1966.

18. ~ ~ ~ CHARLES McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was born in 1875 in Onehunga, Auckland and was baptized on 12 December 1875 at Onehunga Roman Catholic Church. He was the ninth son of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. Charles married ETHEL VERCOE in 1907. Ethel was born in 1877. Charles died in 1920.

RUTH ETHEL McPIKE, born in 1907. Ruth married MERVYN FREDERICK CAIE.

19. ~ ~ ~ WALTER DANIEL McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was baptized on 17 February 1878 in Auckland, New Zealand and was the tenth son of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. Walter married ISABELLA ELLEN MONIGATTI on 6 October 1906 in Westport, Southland, New Zealand. Isabella was born on 1 January 1890 in Westport and was the daughter of JOHANNES MONIGATTI and ISABELLA MOORE. Isabella died on 18 September 1966 in Onehunga, Auckland. Walter died on 27 October 1957 in Auckland and was buried at Waikaraka Cemetery (Area 2, Block O, Plot 16)

GWENDOLYN ARIEL MAVIS McPIKE, born 1907 in Westport, New Zealand. Gwendolyn married ROBERT DOUGLAS HENSON in 1929. Robert was born in 1905; died 1984.

JACQUALINE ISOBELLA CATHERINE McPIKE, born 7 December 1910; died 20 March 2004 in Hastings, New Zealand. Jacqualine married WALTER WILLIAM BUBLITZ. Walter was born in 1910; died 1977. Jacqualine married (2) HECTOR CHARLES WELLINGTON. Jacqualine and Hector are both buried at Taita Cemetery in Lower Hutt, New Zealand.

WALTER DANIEL JAMES McPIKE, born in 1914; died 1988. Walter married JOAN NORMA TYLER. Joan was born in 1919 in Torquay, Cornwall, England.

20. ~ ~ ~ CORNELIUS McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES) was baptized on 31 October 1880 in Onehunga, Auckland and was the eleventh son of JAMES McPIKE and CATHERINE BROWN. Cornelius married CHARLOTTE BISHOP in 1901. Charlotte died in 1920. Cornelius died in 1946.

CORNELIUS FRASER McPIKE, born 1901. Cornelius married DELIA AGNES SARAH SMITH. Delia was born in 1898 and died in 1971.

ROBERT JAMES McPIKE, born 1905. Robert married LILLIAN MARY SHAW in 1931.

WILLIAM JOHN HENRY MCPIKE, born 1907. William died in July 1975 and was buried at Totara Cemetery, Thames (Public Plot B2-0003)

22. ~ ~ ~ FREDERICK SAMUEL McPIKE (JOHN > JOHN > JOHN) was born 25 June 1880 in Thames, New Zealand and was the third son of JOHN McPIKE and MARY DAVISON. Frederick married JOSEPHINE ASHURST CULPAN in 1910. Josephine was born about 1888 and died in 1960. Frederick died on 7 April 1960 and was buried at Totara Cemetery, Thames (Public Plot H-1105)

23. ~ ~ ~ LESLIE JAMES McPIKE (JOHN > JAMES > THOMAS) was born 1893 in Onehunga, Auckland and was the eldest second son of THOMAS McPIKE and LYDIA HOLT. Leslie married MARGARET SUSAN MORRIS on 25 November 1914. Margaret was born in 1894 and died in 1919.

JOHN ROBERT LESLIE McPIKE, born September 1915; died February 1920.

Leslie married (2) CATHERINE CAMERPON MORRISON on 20 July 1927. Catherine was born on 7 September 1906; died 24 December 1993.
