The purpose of this documentation is to bring together as many sources of contemporary information relating to the building of organs in New Zealand to which the writer has had access as possible. It may be used in conjunction with the remainder of this thesis to further illustrate the lives and work of the organ builders (covered in Part IV), and the contexts in which their instruments were built (covered in Parts I to III). Sources relating only to the lives of organ builders are included in Part IV. It may also be used to facilitate further research in related areas. Twenty-four of the organs documented here were visited by John Stiller of Australia in 1981-82. Detailed technical
and photographic documentations were made of eight of these instruments and presented in folders; three more were
prepared. His later Summary Report In April 1996 a new source came to light, comprising sixteen folders of correspondence, and numerous plans and drawings, relating to the work of the Christchurch branch of Hill, Norman and Beard (Australia) Propriety Ltd., of Melbourne, covering the years 1932 to the 1950s. Of particular importance here are two reports on the state of pipe organs in the North Island, one dated November 1932 by William Brodie, who was establishing the firm's presence in New Zealand, and the other dating from the next year by Clarence Turner, a Christchurch organist. Turner had contributed a series of articles to a Christchurch newspaper in 1929 on "Early Church Organs in Canterbury," and although he did not include specifications in his report to Brodie as he had done in his previous articles, his notes in both sources have added materially to our knowledge of builders and their work. Heading Page Each documentation is introduced by a heading page, giving essential information about the organ and its location and sources. The organs are numbered in bold type according to the alphabetical order of their first locations. The documentations numbered in square brackets relate to subsequent locations of these organs, and are placed according to the alphabetical listing of the subsequent location. Unnumbered documentations are of organs not built in New Zealand between the years 1895 and 1930, but of importance to the history of organ building in New Zealand, and to the lives of New Zealand builders, in this period. The names of the locations, printed in bold type, are coded in the following manner: first, the city, town or suburb is named; second, the building is defined as a church (indicated by denomination), convent, school, residence, exhibition or other; third, the proper name of the building is given, such as St. Mary's (if a church), the owner of the residence, the nature of the exhibition, and so on; roman numerals indicate that the instrument is the second or third in that location. Important dates of the locations are listed where known under the title "Premises," and use the following abbreviations: FS, foundation stone laid; B, built; O, opened; C, consecrated; D, dedicated. A semicolon divides successive buildings. The names of the builders and the year(s) in which the organs were built are recorded in bold type. Stop lists are the writer's synopsis of the instruments, and are taken from the nearest sources to the date of opening. Opening dates are occasionally followed by lists of important work executed subsequent to opening. The photographing of organs and the recording of historic images have not been a significant part of this thesis, and only a few are included. Documents are listed by present locations, abbreviations of these (such as TM, Trust Minutes, etc.) are then used to introduce each transcription. Newspapers and periodicals (as well as all other sources) are listed in References at the end of Part IV.
